Residential School Survivor Shares With GWSS Students

On January 8, Grade 10 History students heard Geronimo Henry's account of his 10 years in the Mohawk Residential School in Brantford.  He described the loneliness and confusion he felt upon entering the school at only 5 years old, where right away any connection with his Native culture was severed.

The Library LC was honoured to have Mr. Henry come and share his experiences with our students.  His visit was the culmination of a study on the IRS system in Canada conducted by Gr. 10 History classes.  In addition to hearing an IRS survivor speak, the students participated in the Project of Heart, which involves the creation of a wooden tile in recognition of former IRS students.
